Shoot Before You Buy

That’s right, we’re still not to the point of picking a gun yet!  In order to find the gun that is a right fit for you, you should try to go shooting before making a decision. That way, when you are shopping, you will have a better idea of what different features, ergonomics, sizes, calibers, etc. mean to you as the shooter.  Shooting a few different guns in a couple of different calibers, sizes, actions, etc will give you some context in order to make a more informed decision.

Where Can I Shoot?

There’s probably a gun range somewhere reasonably close to you and you may not even realize it!  Most gun ranges worth their salt have some sort of rentals that you can shoot.  There’s usually a fee to rent a range gun (in the ball park of $15) and you will have to purchase ammunition as well (price varies on caliber, brand, and gun range).  Most ranges will provide ear and eye protection for you free of charge, but these are not free at all ranges.  At least one target usually comes with the range fee or gun rental.  If this will be your first time shooting, you may be feeling nervous or anxious, but that’s okay!  The range staff is there to help you as best they can with how to operate the gun, and will be there to help make sure you’re shooting safely.  Just explain that you are a new shooter and someone should be happy to help you.  When you’re done shooting for the first time, you should leave feeling that you have a basic working understanding of how to operate and shoot a gun.  If you need help later on, don’t be afraid to ask!  If you are comfortable with it, ask more experienced shooters to help you.  The gun community is a very welcoming group and most people will be glad to make sure that you are safe and are improving your abilities.

What should I bring?

If it’s your first time shooting a rental gun, there’s not really a whole lot that you need to bring.  All you really need is money, a comfortable set of clothes, and closed-toe shoes.  You may elect to bring extra targets if you think you’ll be shooting quite a bit. The range should have everything else.  (Note to ladies: due to the ejection of extremely hot brass casings out of semi-automatic handguns, it is highly recommended that you wear a conservatively-styled shirt to avoid these casings from going down inside your shirt/bra.)

What if I Want to Try Out a Variety of Different Guns?

Some ranges have MANY rental choices available to you.  Some ranges will allow you a few shots with different guns.  You might not be able to tell if you like a gun with just a few shots, but you will know if you don’t like it.  Be sure to call the range ahead of time to see if they offer this service to customers, and what the details are.

Are Classes Available to Teach Me Hands-On?

Yes, many ranges offer basic handgun classes to get you acquainted with shooting for the first time.

Notes to Take While Shooting Different Handguns:

  • Does the gun I’m shooting have any malfunctions?  Take note of the model and caliber if it does.  Do an internet search on the gun when you get home and see if there is an ongoing issue with that particular model.  If there is, you will probably want to take that one off of your wish-list.
  • Is the gun easy and simple to operate?
  • Am I more comfortable with larger or smaller-framed handguns?
  • Is this gun going to be practical for the way I want to carry it?
  • Do I seem to operate, shoot, and handle a particular gun better than others?  Why do I think that is?
  • Can I see the sights clearly?

FREE Downloadable Target Pack from Haley Strategic Partners

Former Recon Marine and Blackwater operator Travis Haley designed this target pack to help hone and test your handgun fundamentals.  I shoot at least a couple of them every time I’m at the range and can tell you that they’ve helped me nail my trigger control and diagnose problems in my grip and trigger pull.  You can download the target pack for free and print off as many as you are going to need.  I’ve also linked a couple of videos of Travis shooting through these targets so you can get an idea of what to try.
